Again, this might not be your problem, but it's an easy first step before attempting more involved solutions. Just bought an original Microsoft Sidewinder mouse today, can't install Intellipoint as i have the same error (1603). But on... With the system in this state, Windows Update and Microsoft Update fails with error code 8000FFFF, and Office 2007 does not install.
You may need your Win 7 disc, though most of the time you don't. Unfortunately I would need another weeks vacation to reinstall all my software and goodies that I had with my Vista system.
