i press esc key at error and that is the only way my system startup. Anyway, I have another thinkpad (T29 - which has its own issues by the way) so I took the fan from the T42 and tried it on the T29 - its I can kind of use the computer for a while, but it's obviously not a great solution. Besides this, you may want to have the laptop serviced, or purchase a new fan yourself.

After running some simple diagnostic goodies I found in that menu, I went back to the BIOS and restored the default again, but this time NOT the OS optimized defaults. It is labeled DC5V .2A, where the T42's original fan is a DC5V 0.4A-but my understanding stays a fan with a lower ampere should spin where a higher one was. Freaked out totally. Not only will it have better brightness, colour, contrast and viewing angles - you will most probably more than make up the investment when selling it.
