Im guessing that the fan not spinning at all is the problem??? I've read a few others advising tweaking the thermal management settings in BIOS, but the t41p doesn't have that option. Symptoms over the past few months included an increasingly noisy fan that ran almost constantly, freeze-ups, slowdowns, unexpected shutdowns, finally ending with the dreaded "Fan error" message and not booting up. However, when I received my fan, I noticed it was not exactly the same as the original fan.

I changed them to read "Maximum Battery" which is the same setting for when Battery Power is used, which is the only time the laptop is working appropriately. I came back from nap and turned it on for a normal day's work, only to get two beeps and the Fan error message. It still gives the fan error but can continue and can open windows. You will notice a series of small vents. No real harm though, the computer just showed boot menu and the hard disk wouldn't boot. Sent from my All-In-One Desktop.

I really doubt that you can disable the fan check. I stuffed paper between the keyboard and fan (not covering the fan, just the heat sync). Could be bad memory. Do you have this document?
My question is, are there 3 parts needed here? I found and researched this forum before purchasing system components and during the assembly of my system. It seems the touchpad is an important part of the circuit and if it is disconnected, there is excess current supplied to the CPU, which overheats it. I saw some settings for "Minimum power" and "Always slow" processing speed, but a super slow computer doesn't do me much good anyway.
I have an X61 that just got this problem. If you burn the video chip, you'll have to replace the whole motherboard. My t42 went out so I bought on ebay a “t42″ heatsink and fan assembly. Simply blow air from you're mouth into the left side where the fan exhaust is.
