thanks! Im guessing that the fan not spinning at all is the problem??? the machine will not allow itself to be started unless the fan has been tested positively by the BIOS. The fan was stuck, so I manually spun it around with a small screw driver and blasted the area with some compressed air until the fan was freely spinning again. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T61-and-prior-T-series/fan-error-at-startup-in-ibm-thinkpad-t42/td-p/273159
I don't understand what could be wrong, I can hear the fan when I press the power button and it stays on until I press the power button again to turn The manual also says to take pink plastic piece off before installing, however the fan I was replacing still had it on and other people mentioned leaving it on so i It doesn't matter what I do at startup - within 10 seconds it will shut down. We use data about you for a number of purposes explained in the links below. Could be bad motherboard. T42 w/ 2GB RAM and 15" 1400x1050 screen. Does the unit still boot if not hit ESC and it should?
Go to this site http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/homeLenovo.do and type the machine type number in the search box (for example 2378-FVU and click go). The T40 works fine again. Sometimes the problem can be a sticky fan or sticky grease in the fan, and rarely you'll get lucky and the fan will un-stick and start working again.
