Working from an image would be a good idea for the recovery... Shall I give Spinrite another whirl (my drive has been unconnected for the last couple of months ever since the problem)? You might want to stop running any chkdsk or recovery attempt before knowing if it's BIOS settings/hardware/driver that causes the BSOD and not responding problem. Can't be sure without special hardware to test the drive exactly what the failure is, but it definitely is looking like a failure at the physical level of the drive. It does let me write a new MBR but it does nothing (after rebooting) I dont know where to go from here. Formatting the partition options give an I/O error (CRC Check). We use data about you for a number of purposes explained in the links below. Tried using recova on my HDD. It's easy!
